Role-Playing Gamification of Flipped Classroom (RPGFC)

- A new learner-centred and outcome-based teaching and learning pedagogy -

"The role-playing element is expected to promote higher order of cognitive learning since being challenged to teach is one of the ultimate ways of active learning"

Prof. Yi-Chun Lu - Principal Investigator RPGFC Project

What is RPGFC?

Proposed Methodology for RPGFC

Prior-Class

The instructor prepares multiple pre-recorded topic-based short lecture videos explaining the key and difficult concepts for all students to watch before in-class time.

The instructor also prepares a set of key reading materials that are topically connected to the short video for all students to read before in-class time.

Terms: Teaching Group - TG, Learning Group - LG

In-Class

The TG will lead and the instructor will co-lead an interactive presentation on the subject topic imbedded with excercises, discussion points, quizzes that are synthesized together with the instructor prior class, aiming to help the LGs to leard.

The Instructor will assess the in-class performance of the TG (e.g the interactive teaching and the question-answering) based on pre-announced assessment dimensions and criteria.

Post-Class

The TG meets with the Instructor to discuss and get feedbacks on their in-class delivering.

They also discuss and analyze the learning outcomes of the LGs based on the in-class interactions, results on exercises and quizzes to identify concepts that require more explanation or exercises

About Flipped Classroom

You may have heard that flipped and blended learning are transforming school and university classrooms, but what exactly is a flipped classroom? With the teacher at the front and students seated in rows, the classroom has barely changed in the last century. But, today we know that there's no 'one size fits all' approach to learning.

The flipped classroom is a form of blended learning that brings together advances in education and technology to deliver instruction online, outside of class, via video, and moving 'homework' into the classroom. The end result is a personalized, engaging learning experience for every student — whatever their learning style, pace, or ability.  -Media Core-

Why RPGFC?

Role-Playing

Student to teach.

Gamification

To make it competitive element

Flipped Classroom

Learn with micro-modules and online resources before class

Tools for RPGFC

1. Micro-modules

Micro-modules can be used to provide continual re-enforcement and enhance the teaching and learning quality. Instead of giving the whole lecture in one long class presentation...

2. Software / Apps

Recommended software / apps that can be use support and enhance the class interactions.
